i had win98 instaleed on my c:/ drive and then i
installed winXP but it was installed on my d:/ drive so
noew i have 2 OS's.
can i format the c:/ drive or is there any way to get rid
of the win98?

You can format the drive but most likely your Windows XP boot files are
located there, also D wont be marked active for boot. Copy NTLDR,
ntdetect.com and boot.ini to a floppy that you can boot off of. Or you can
inplace the OS for XP and that will replace them.
