CD-R quit working with XP

After installing XP, everything on my PC worked as it was
supposed to. I don't use my CD-R often, so didn't notice
exactly when it quit working, but suspect one of the
automatic updates has a flaw. The only way to be sure is
to re-install XP then install the updates one at a time
until it fails again. I know of a few other people that
are having the same problem, so I know it isn't just me.
Any suggestions before going through the laborious task
of starting over?
