View Full Version : Saving screenshots from DVD movies
Nick Cellino
December 5th 03, 01:09 AM
I have tried unsuccessfully to use the Print Scrn key to save screenshots
from DVD movies I have purchased. Each time I save the screenshot to a .jpg
file or .bmp file, the contents disappear as soon as I exit the software
that plays the DVD. In other words, the screenshot file which I have saved
to my HD is only visible while the DVD software remains loaded and turns to
black as soon as I exit the software. Even the clipboard image turns to
black after exiting.
I have three questions about this:
1. Is this a security feature set up by the studios to protect their movies?
2. Is there a way around this so I can save screenshots for personal use?
3. How can the contents of a file seemingly saved to my HD just disappear
like that?

to answer your questions:
1. no, i don't believe that it is a security feature of the studios. what
happens here is that, the image (video) is sent directly to the video card
which means that if you press the print screen button, the computer won't be
able to grab anything from the cpu because it's not there. this is the
reason why any dvd software need direct x or direct play because the images
are not processed by the cpu. using this method, the work for the cpu is
lessened although playing dvds require ample cpu processing.
2. to save images from a dvd, your dvd software player has a button which
you click on and the image is saved. if you are using power dvd, look for
the camera key at the panel and you can click on it to grab a frame. my
apologies but i can't remember the shortcut key to use as of the moment.
3. the contents did not disappear from your hard disk. when you have
pressed the print screen button, the computer did not save anything to the
disk anyway. what it saved is the pallet in which the video would appear.
here's a trick you can try. try pressing the print screen button when
playing your dvd. save the file. then open it using paint or any graphics
editiong software. play any video using the same dvd software. now place the
"saved grab" over the window of the dvd movie and you may see that the video
passes through or appears on the pallet you have saved.
i hope this is of a little help

To clarify what I had written previously, I did more than press the Print
Scrn key; I pasted the image on the clipboard into several graphics programs
and saved the file as a .jpg or .bmp. This image file looks normal while the
DVD software is loaded but turns to black as soon as I exit the DVD
software. The saved file seems to change which I find strange.
In my case, I am using RealOne Player to play the DVD. I looked for the
'save image' button but couldn't find it. I also have the MediaMatics
software that came with the drive and Windows Media Player. Do any of these
programs have the 'button' you describe?

WinDVD is the only DVD player I know of that will allow this.
The key sequence to do this is also undocumented in the software but is
available on the web at the DVDGenie home page, however the technique is
buried in a review of WinDVD.
I've used WinDVD for years however I don't use this at all and have
forgotten how so your on your own as far as finding it. The key sequence is
something like CTRL + P while viewing the movie. I've used just about every
DVD player that has been coded for Windows and I don't think you'll find
another player that allows this option.

From InterVideo web site for WINDVD support:
=========================
How do I use capture?
You can capture a still image during movie playback. Press the P key at any
time to capture a BMP file of the current frame. Capture does not work on
zoomed regions and on some hardware motion compensation graphics chips. If
you are experiencing problems with capture, disable the hardware motion
compensation and try capturing again.
Captured images are stored in the Capture subdirectory of the WinDVD
directory on your hard drive. Captured files are numbered sequentially:
cap001.bmp, cap002.bmp, and so on.

Thanks for finding this. I don't use it but others obviously want this
feature.
The DVD Genie website doesn't have this review posted anymore and the
software does not tell you how to do this.
I've used most DVD players and have stuck with WinDVD it has it's quirks but
as far as I'm concerned it's the best player. The video on PowerDVD sucks
and other DVD players just generally suck. The only big problem with WinDVD
is updates for the most part are not free but they are discounted. I could
have purchased three standalone DVD players with the cash I've had to put
out getting updates for WinDVD. Unless the DVD format changes and they
become unplayable I'll not give them another dime for an update. I'll stick
to the versions I have.

Thanks, JayMac and Bernie.
I downloaded and installed the trial version of WinDVD Platinum. Pressing
the P key does capture the frame perfectly. On my computer, the captured
images are stored in the following directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\Default\My Documents\My Pictures\WINDVD Capture
Captured files are numbered sequentially as follows:
Bitmap 0.bmp, Bitmap 1.bmp, etc.

| Thanks, JayMac and Bernie.
|
| I downloaded and installed the trial version of WinDVD Platinum. Pressing
| the P key does capture the frame perfectly. On my computer, the captured
| images are stored in the following directory:
| C:\Documents and Settings\Default\My Documents\My Pictures\WINDVD Capture
|
| Captured files are numbered sequentially as follows:
| Bitmap 0.bmp, Bitmap 1.bmp, etc.
