View Full Version : Using HP5370c Scanner with XP

Hi All,
I am using an HP5370c scanner connected via USB to Win XP.
This scanner like most - has a copy facility that allows printing directly
to a printer (via the computer)
The problem is that I can only get this facility to work in the Admin
account. When I try it in a Limited account it locks up. I find this typical
with so much third party s/w for XP. Things work great in Admin
and not so great in a Limited accounts.
Anyone managed to get this s/w (I am using HP PrecisionScan Pro 2.52)
working properly in a Limited account.

Regards Ron H.

Ron, the problem is that many programs are not "user aware." The program
vendors, HP in this case, should have some info for you at their website
about getting setup for all users. Worth a shot as installers are being
updated to work within the XP framework.

Another workaround: Elevate the user account to administrator status.
Install the software from their account. Launch it at least once. Then place
them back into Limited Users group. The permissions for running that
software while it was in the administrator group should follow it back to
Limited Users.

Or use RunAs where the name of an admin account and password are entered to
access a program. Of course, there's nothing stopping that person from
logging on to that account directly since they would know the login info.
Not always desirable (depending on your users) but it's an available option.

Problem with running scanner as "run as" is that the scanned
images and files created will be in that users account and
not accessible to the other user unless you share that
folder.

I have the same problem with a HP 5500c and will try the
upgrade/scan/demote user to see if the scanner will still
work. I had dragged the program into all users but the
program still wouldn't run unless an admin. acct. Even
wouldn't run as power user.

Thanks Sharon,
I will try your suggestions - but to make a whinge for all readers
(hopefully some of which will filter back to developers). XP is a fully
established os with multi user switching capability. If you are going to
write s/w (eg HP who should know better) - MAKE IT USER AWARE. So many
vendors say their s/w is XP compliant, but it is clear it was never tested
in a Limited account - or with multiple users accessing it.

You're welcome, Ron and whinge as loud as you want. I'll whinge with you as
I strongly agree that this is something the vendors should address and soon!
