hi i was trying to upgrade my windows

i have a question i was trying to upgrade my windows from
xp home edition to xp professioanl i put the cd in the cd-
rom and after a while the drive gave me an error and also
that do i need to format the c: or the hard drive and
then install new windows and can you give me infor how to
install new windows

Do you mean Clean Installation, destroying all data:
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:

Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.

Put the CD in the drive, reboot the computer. It will boot
from the CD and offer to upgrade your installation. Your
data should be safe, but it is always a good idea to backup
important data. Installed applications will be retained.

If you want to do a clean install, the same procedure will
work, just select the options you want.
