View Full Version : Upgrade MO-BO W/O re-install Windows xP?

I am trying to find out if it is possible, in XP Home &
XP Pro, to upgrade my ATX P4 Motherboard with an Intel
845-(ICH2) Chipset to a newer MO-BO with an Intel 845E
(ICH4) Chipset or Intel 875P (ICH5) Chipset, and have
Windows not become un-stable? (not have to re-install)
I know that in the past when going from Intel to Via
Chipsets, Windows 98SE became unstable and I had to re-
load my OS. Is XP the same?

I have not yet attempted this in either version of XP yet.
Is it possible to upgrade to a newer, faster FSB Mo-Bo
and not have to re-install Windows and loose all of my
Data/Programs?

I would like to upgrade from 400 FSB speed to 533 or even
800!

Thanx for the help.

Alvin - have YOU tried the link you keep posting?

An upgrade of the kind you have in mind will usually require you to perform
a repair install (also known as an in-place upgrade) from the XP CD. This
will re-configure your XP installation to use the new hardware. You should
not lose any data during this process but it is advisably to back-up any
important files as a precaution. You will also need to re-install any XP
updates and service packs.

You may need to reactivate after this procedure.. but if you have not made
any hardware changes in the previous 120 days you will be able to do this
over the internet. Otherwise it's a 5-10 minute phone call.

Some users recommend, and I generally fall into this camp, that it's better
to perform a new clean install (after doing the necessary back-ups) and so
have a completely clean installation of XP for your new hardware. But it's
entirely your choice.

Hope that helps
Pete

The repair install has never worked for me. I have had major networking
problems and other problems after several repair installs regarding
motherboard swaps. Each time I have ended up doing a format and clean
install. I tried the Microsoft backup, clean install and restore but that
did not work as planned. Another problem mentioned little is that if you
have SP1 installed that in itself will cause networking problems. SP1 needs
to reinstalled right after you do the repair install.
I recently switched motherboards, same make same model but different
revisions. Long story short I spent a couple of days trying to get it right
and ended up formatting and doing a clean install. My dial up dissapeared,
that was due to the service SP1, once I reinstalled SP1 the dial up came
back but my internet explorer and other network apps could not connect into
my dialed up connection. After a while you have to give up. It took me less
than half the time to do a clean install.
Good Luck

Greg

Excuse me for replying to your post, but since you felt the need to reply to
mine rather than the OP here we go.

First of all, thank you for sharing.

I'm very sorry to hear of your personal experience with the repair install
option but as you, hopefully, will have read the OP wanted to know of an
alternative to the full clean install option. Most users, ie all the many
users who do not utilize the NG experience have little problem with the
repair install... in fact the system I am current using has been through
both the repair install routine and the clean re-install routine at various
times.

As for the cautions you suggest, as I recall, I did point out that the
repair install would require the re-installation of any service packs and
updates afterwards.

In addition, as well as recommending that the OP performed back-ups before
undertaking the repair install option, my recommendation was also that the
OP would be advised to back-up and then perform a full clean installation,
but that there was an alternative to try first.

In the meantime let's hope that the OP wasn't put off by Alvin's
inaccessible link.

Once again, thank you for sharing.

Pete

It can sometimes work, if the old and new motherboards are very very close
to being identical to each other. However it is risky, and the downside
of doing so is that you risk losing everything. That has happened to more
than one user who has just replaced the motherboard and started up XP
normally.

The recommended procedure for a motherboard replacement is as per the
detailed instructions at http://michaelstevenstech.com/moving_xp.html

Greetings --

Normally, unless the new motherboard is virtually identical to the
old one (same chipset, IDE controllers, etc), you'll need to perform a
repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, at the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

This may also require re-activation. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most
likely be able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

It looks like a repair installation and then reinstall of service pack one
is the proper way to do it. As it turns out I hope to be replacing this
motherboard this weekend. I had originally purchased a gigabyte ga-7vaxp
rev. 1.2 but it had a bad fire wire port. Took it back to fry's and they
gave me a rev. 1.1. So I am back to fry's to get a rev. 1.2. If everything
goes well I will post back soon. Wish me luck, I think I will need it.
