Shorcuts are a file type (LNK). They can be broken for a number of reasons.
- A damaged shortcut file: Create a new one to see if it works.
- Target no longer exists: Check the shortcut's Properties to find the path
to its target. Follow the path to confirm the object still exists.
It sounds like you've already tried the above. Shortcut files can also be
broken by damage to the LNK keys in the registry. There are a few viruses
known to do this as well. Check the system for virus with an up-to-date
antivirus program. Fix the shortcut file type using MVP Doug Knox's fix
found here: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
NOTE: After unzipping the REG file, you can open it in Notepad to review
what changes it will make to your registry. To use the file, double click on
it and answer yes to the prompt about importing.
