View Full Version : Can't install Maxtor USB 2.0 Drive

I have a Sony laptop (900MHz Duron), a Belkin USB 2.0
PCMCIA card, Maxtor 5000LE USB hard drive, and Windows XP
SP1.
From the control panel, the hardware is detected and
shows no conflicts after installation. The drive
however, is not recognized by windows (no drive letter
appears under explorer). If I plug the drive into a USB
1.1 port, the drive functions normally.
Appreciate any help...

No hard drive will be 'seen' by Windows until it is partitioned, formatted
and assigned a drive letter.
Right click on My Computer and select Manage.
On the following screen, select Disk Management.
The new drive should appear on the right hand side of the screen from where
you can do the appropriate actions.

I am attempting to use approximately the same configuration, but with
disastrous results. Different brand of laptop (Thinkpad T23) but same
USB card and same drive. I can plug in the USB card (Belkin) and XP
seems OK with it, but when I plug in the cable that connects it to the
drive, I get the Blue Screen of Death. It goes by too fast for me to
see what it says, and then XP reboots itself.
I downloaded the latest drivers from both Belkin and Maxtor, and I
don't know how to proceed?! I'd like to make this work.
Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this!
Cheers,
Don

When XP restarts, go into the Control Panel, click on Admin Tools and then
Event Log. There should be some indication here of what the problem is.
