Recent strange phenomenon. When I delete something I am asked to confirm
that it should go into Recycle bin; I agree, but when I later look in
the bin, there is nothing there (although the file does get deleted).
Obviously I cannot then recover something I regret deleting.
Grateful for any clue to what is happening.

Right click "recycle bin" > properties
Maybe "Do not move files to recycle bin" is checked.
If so Uncheck it

I have this same problem, and when I looked in the
Properties, the box was not checked, so now I don't know
what to do?

Have you overflowed the recycle bin? If the amount of space for deleted
files is exceeded the result is a deletion of a file and will not show up in
the bin.
