View Full Version : USB, WINXP and Me...banging my head against the wall

All USB devices will not work. I don't get it. XP detects my devices,
then installs them as "Unknown Device".
Abit SH6
512MB Crucial Ram
IBM 80 HD
Pioneer 106s DVD drive IDE
Yamaha CRW3200EZ CDRW IDE
PIII 933
GeForce 4ti 4200 128 DDR
Audigy 2 Sound Card
XP Professional SP1 completely updated.
I probably wouldn't be asking what to do if I hadn't tried everything I
can think of. I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, etc. Tried setting
them up with device power on, and device power off. Nothing. Nada,
Zip, Zilch, Z-E-R-O.
I started from a CLEAN install, NOT an upgrade.
The main things I can't get to work are my Intellimouse Explorer and my
HP 5550 Printer. I have all the updated drivers, software etc.
The ports work, I know that much. They have to be getting power or they
would not detect devices. And the Intel USB ready app detects them as
working as well. I tried uninstalling them in safe mode, I tried
manually installing a driver and that doensn't work. BIOS setting are
all ok, BIOS is up to date.
I've been all through Microsoft's site and I have access to Technet CD's
at work, and nothing has come close to helping me.
Does anyone have any idea's?
Thanks

Dan,
I can't really help, because it sounds like you've done just about
everything I'd have done in these circumstances, but here's a couple of
suggestions / questions:
1) are ALL USB ports affected? i.e, both the onboard motherboard ports AND
the front-panel USB ports, if present? if it's only the front-panel ports,
maybe you've wired them incorrectly...?
2) do you have access to a PCI USB card? Maybe try using that.. if THAT
works, then it suggests that the problem is with your motherboard's ports.
If it DOESN'T work, then a problem with the OS - however unlikely - is
indicated.
Hope this helps. Good luck..

David,
Yeah, it's all ports. I don't have extra front ones, but I do have
extra rear ports. 4 total. I get the same thing with all of them.
I have a PCI card on the way. It better work...or I'm going to erupt:)
I hope it's not an OS problem, because I just rebuilt this machine wed,
and I sure as hell don't want to do it again.
Thanks!
