View Full Version : can't get scanner to run

I just got Windows XP in my new computer. For years I
have used a Visioneer Model "Paperport" passthru scanner
(uses the serial port). I have a lot of info business
cards etc that I have scanned. Now I cant get the system
to recognize the Paperport. Visioneer told me it was out
of date and it would not run on Win XP.
What do I have to do to get my Paperport up and running ??
Need help.

You probably meant parallel port pass-through. If Visioneer has no
drivers for Windows XP, then there are no drivers. You can buy a
replacement scanner which is faster for under $60.00. Why flog a
dead horse? I have a long line of doorstops, such as Canon BJC-5100
printer, Visioneer 3100USB scanner, Iomega tape drive, Synchrome CD
drive and U.S. Robotics Sportster modem.

Greetings --

If the scanner's manufacturer has "abandoned" the device, and made
the business decision not to provide WinXP drivers for it, there's
really very little chance that anyone else do so. Your options, at
this point, are to either buy a new scanner, or continue to use an
older, compatible operating system.

Buy a new version, PaperPort 8 is out now and should be
abler to read your old files. You can buy a much better,
faster, scanner for less than $150, maybe even less than
$75. It will be USB (maybe 2.0) and will work better.

You might try the win2k drivers, if any. Otherwise, welcome to the
world of "abandonware".

Frankly, I would appreciate Microsoft's simple explanation for why XP
cannot support so much legacy equipment.

I have the same problem with a UMAX Vista S6E scanner. I
just installed Windows XP ten days ago. I figured I
wouldn't be able to use the scanner but I went searching
through this newsgroup to find out for sure. Umax's Web
Site simply says that there are no Windows XP drivers for
the scanner. But it's no help that when I turned the
scanner on for the first time since the install of XP,
Windows says "I've found new hardware! Would you like me to
install it?" "Sure," I reply but then Windows tells me it
can't find the drivers and then gets stuck in an endless
loop of trying to install the drivers and not being able to
find the drivers until I finally have to turn the device
off to make that stop, when it comes up with another error
message saying there may be a problem with my hardware.
Yeah, well, if you couldn't install the device in the first
place, you shouldn't have made the offer.

Come on now - Windows tries to offer help, realizes it doesn't have
the drivers built in and gives you every chance to try and find the
drivers on your own and provide them. The "endless loop" can be ended
by a click on the "cancel" button...I've encountered many a person who
were amazed at how fast that worked when they got stuck in the
"endless loop."

It also angers me when people blame MS for not supporting their aging
hardware. It is not the job of MS to develop and provide drivers for
every piece of hardware that exists. They provide necessary code to
hardware manufacturers. It is up to those companies to decide if they
want to make drivers or drop support for the new OS. Don't blame MS.

I know some guys who still have Model T's from Ford. You don't hear
them complaining that Ford no longer provides parts/support for this
car.
