View Full Version : Additional on Windows-Delayed Write Failed

This refers to my earlier msg. Sunday 5/4 2:45 P.M.
Pacific.
My defrag. won't defrag. until after CHKDSK has run. The
Disk Defragmenter shows a huge quantity of Master File
Table (MFT) files which can't be defragmented. They are
unknown to me and have appeared suddenly at same time as
my pop-up box started its dance. The total MFT size is 199
MB. MFT record count is 202,791. Percent MFT in use is
99%. Total MFT fragments is 79.
The definition of these files is \sdel.tmp0 through
\sdel.tmp7. Each one of these is 3 fragments and 1.77 MB.
Is this the problem and where did all this stuff come from?

Please try to keep related posts in the same thread... otherwise you miss
responses and those trying to help may not connect your new posts to the
original.

If you check your original post you'll see I recommended that you reply with
details of your hardware set-up as that may be essential for anyone trying
to help you.

From what you saying here though, the .tmp files would appear to be a
symptom of the problem and not the problem itself.... are you using a SCSI
drive by any chance?

I'm not certain what info. you need Pete. I have "AIDA-
32", so do have a wealth of it. Will give you some basic
stuff and please let me know what additional you need.
Indicate category to look under please.
Am running a Dell 4300 with Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.60 GHZ.
PC133 SDRAM. Disk Drive is ST380021A (80 GB, 7200 RPM,
Ultra ATA/100. BIOS is Phoenix. System is NTFS 76,308 MB
(51,430 MB Free). I realize this isn't what you need, but
it's a start. Really appreciate your help.
Also, as an added sidelight, after CHKDSK runs my Zone
Alarm programs have to be re-entered for authorization.

Regards,
Nat

Is your Dell on a network, or is it a stand-alone system?
If networked then have a look at this KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321733

It's only recommended for systems networked through a server... but see if
you can identify a entry in the XP event log that corresponds exactly to the
description given (I think AIDA32 may be able to help you look at the event
log if necessary, although it's not a utility I've used).

Look in the event log in any case for any obvious relevant entries and note
the Event ID No.

If standalone, has the hardware been changed since you got the system? ie
new motherboard, processor? If it's the same system, Dell has an support
site that may be able to help if you still have their TAG number (white
label) on your system. May be worth checking if you can access it, look for
any downloadable updates too. Otherwise what changes, if any, have you made
to the system hardware?

Also Seagate, your hard drive manufacturer also has downloadable tools
(Seatools) for checking their hard drives.. might be worth giving that a
spin just to double-check the drive.

At least there's a few ideas to keep you going. Sorry if it seems a bit
scattergun but, if it's not the networked problem, it may well be a process
of elimination since it seems like a breakdown in communication somewhere
between the hard-drive and the rest of the system.

Hope some of that helps
Pete
