Hi,
The error message usually indicates one of two things:
1) Boot.ini is corrupt
2) You are using a 40 pin controller cable where you should be using an =
80 pin cable
For the former, boot the Recovery Console and run bootcfg /rebuild from =
the command prompt. See:
HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console in Windows XP [Q307654]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=3D307654
For the latter, replace the cable with the correct one.

---->>enter your system bios and change the boot sequence, make it to
boot using your cd rom drive (atapi or ide cdrom drive).save the
changes and before you exit bios put in your winxp cd in your primary
cdrom.this should let you enter to windows setup.at the welcome screen
press R to repair using recovery console.type in number 1 at the
prompt where it asks which windows you want to log onto.press enter if
it asks for an administrator password.this should take you to a
c:>windows prompt, from there type in CHKDSK /R.after this is
done, type in EXIT at the same prompt.

I'm too old to have any ideals, but in addition to the other good
advice, check your computer vendor web site tech support area to see if
there is an update for your computer that fixes this and disable write
caching on your hard drive until you get a fix.

Running chkdsk /r will not fix this type of error. Boot.ini will need to =
be rebuilt if corrupt, or edited directly to fix it (if it has a wrong =
value in place for say rdisk or partition). Chkdsk will not fix a =
problem with using the cable either, nor the write caching mentioned by =
Kent.
