Last year I upgraded to WinXP. I have just installed a
second hard drive, copied my original hard drive over,
then disconnected it (the original HD). When I try to
start up using the new HD, WinXP starts to boot, but when
it gets to the blue "Welcome" screen it freezes. What do
I need to do to get the new HD working properly with
WinXP?

Thanks for your help,

Bob

Hello

You not not just copy your OS over to a new Harddrive and expect it
to work, what you have to od is use Norton's Ghost 2003 ok. What
you did will not work and it will always freeze.

I've tried this and it still didn't work. I used Ghost to clone the old
drive onto the new drive but I can't get XP to boot from the new drive. I
swapped the master/slave setups on the drives but XP still thinks the old
drive is drive C:. The Drive Management utility won't allow changing the
drive letter of the boot drive so that doesn't work either. I've looked in
the Knowledge Base and haven't found any help there. If someone has solved
this problem I'd like to know how.

Hello

Well if all else fails reload Windows on the new drive and then just
copy your data over, it's a longer process but will work much better
you always have that option

Doug,

Run a Repair Install over the current install (new HDD). This should clean
up any problems and get you running without reinstalling all apps again.

It depends on how you did the copying - a file based copy is unlikely to
have succeeded. You need to do it by an exact image copy - What I use
is BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($30 shareware - 35 day full
functional trial)

Download, to its own folder, extract from the zip, run the bootitng to
make a boot floppy.

With the new drive plugged in as slave/secondary, boot the floppy,
Cancel Install, entering maintenance, then click on Partition work.
Highlight your C:,Copy, then on left select the new drive (HD1) and
Paste.

You might then consider a resize up a bit. Or highlight the free space
remaining beyond, click Create choosing Extended partition to use the
rest of the space, then similarly in that to make one or more volumes
in that (to become drives D:, etc)

Now click on 'View MBR' and in it highlight the entry for this new C
partition and click the 'Set Active' Click 'Write Standard MBR' and
Apply. Also make a check that this partition is in the same place in
the table as it was if you do a View MBR on the old one - if not use the
Up or down to correct it.

Close out, swap the disks to make the new one the one that boots, and
reboot into XP.

Remove underlines and comment between underlines for email
to me.

I just finally upgraded my computer to where its stable (i
got rid of my AMD stuff PERIOD), but I am sure that in a
few months, I will want to upgrade my 80gb hard drive to a
120gb or even a 250gb since I plan on doing more video
editing. Is there a way to upgrade my hard drive and
transfer my operating system over to it without buying
NORTON GHOST, or doing anything major. I know that
Microsoft has a program for transfering from an old 98
machine to xp when you are upgrading to a new computer.
How can I do this without having to re-register my
computer for the 5th time (ive had to upgrade 3
motherboards over the past year). Im not sure if the
people at validations are going to go bezerk over my
reregistering my ONE computer so many times. Besides, it
just plainly TIME CONSUMING to reinstall EVERYTHING, plus
the chance of losing data. Can I use the Microsoft Backup
program and backup my hard drive to DVD or to another
partition and then reinstall to the new hard drive?????

Thanks... If you can post here and email me, I would
really appreciate it.
