I am runnning Windows XP Home Addition which I purchased
and installed about three months ago.

When I hook up my External Sony CD-RW, via USB, and IPL my
PC, my Internal CD is Unassigned. I can see the Sony drive
when I reference it via, "My Computer". When I try to
access it, I get the following error message: "Windows
cannot start this hardware because it's configuration
information (in registry) is incomplete or damaged (Code 19).

Will downloading the Windows XP Professional SP1a Enlish
Patch CD Pro/Home resovle my problems?

I also don't understand why my internal CD Drive gets
unassigned because of the problem with my Sony CD-RW Drive.

Thanks, Buck

This cold be caused by some references to drivers being left behind in the
registry after uninstalling an application.
Try the KB here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];q314060

or the 'Restore Missing CD Drive' registry patch here:
http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm

Note that the registry patch isn't officially supported, and you should take
proper precautions to back up your registry before doing so. After
uninstalling the patch if you find some programs like CD Recording or DVD
Decoding applications fail to work, reinstall them.
