I have an HP officejet d135. The fax modem sustained an
electrical storm hit and needed to be replaced. Now I
can't load the HP software in under 1.25 hours -
something that should take ten minutes. My Vaio XP unit
must have sustained minor damage as well. At least HP
said they have done all they could.
1. Is there a windows xp dignostic program I can run to
see if my windows xp is healthy?
2. If the windows XP was hit can I download the program
without losing everything else in memeory?
Thanks very much- I'm genuinely desparate.

Michael;
Try this (checks for and replaces corrupted Windows files)
Start/Run, type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
You will need your Windows CD
Otherwise try a Repair Installation:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_install.htm
You may or may not be able to use these options if you are using a
recovery CD in which case you may have to use the recovery CD
(probably destroying all data)

If an electrical storm caused this, does your insurance cover this?
It is possible that the computer was severely damaged and will never
really work properly again.
