Here's the deal: I have a laptop w/ 98 and a desktop w/
XP. I want to hook them together with a null modem
cable. The problem is I can't find where to set up a
direct connection in XP. I'm open to any suggestions.

No, I can't do it with an ethernet cable. The laptop
doesn't have an ethernet port. Yes, it's an old laptop.

Go to Control Panel - Network connections. On the left, 'create a new
connection' and follow through - 'set up an advanced connection' ;
connect direct to another computer; make yourself Host and select the
port you want to use
