View Full Version : Can't install PCI cards

I am having trouble installing two PCI cards on my
machine - one is a networking card, which installed easily
on my old machine running 95, the other is a Winfast TV
tuner.

The system recognises the new hardware on and starts the
installation process, even going to the extent of offering
to shut down so that it will work once it is complete.
However, I then get a message 'Hardware did not install
properly, it may not work, Data Invalid'. Both devices are
supposed to work with Windows XP. Seems the problem is
either the OS or the Motherboard. Any thoughts?

You should install them one at a time.

Reboot after each.

Networking card and TV tuners are basic cards, but perhaps
it is time to buy something a little newer.

Have you flashed your BIOS to the latest version?

Its an XP registry protection prob Bill.

Go to start/run. Type regedit. Go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\PCI

Find the devices under one of the headings

(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\PCI\ VEN_ whatever it is etc.
Click on the +'s. Highlight the entry, then select permissions.

Tick Full Control, then OK for each one. Quit
regedit. Then reboot. XP will install the drivers
for it.

Thanks - I found the solution another place as well. Given
the fact that the problem seems to be inherent in Windows,
I am surprised not many people are aware of it (I have
asked many, many, many techos about it!)

Cheers,

No worries Bill.

I too, didnt know until I found the
answer.

I had the same prob!

It was annoying. Every single PCI card
no matter what it was, brought up
that data is invalid error. The only
thing I could do, was what i typed before.

Reboot and it fixed it.However I have
reformatted since then, and bob's ya
uncle! That prob disappeared too!

I dont know if this prob occurs
in XP Home, BUT it definitely
does exist in XP PRO!

Cheers

And what Jim said.

You can install as many PCI cards
as you want at one time.

I plugged in a modem, a NIC, a firewire
4 port card and a USB 2 4 port card,
and all worked the drivers installed fine.

XP detected and installed all drivers,
all at once.

I dont think XP is that lame, you have
to install PCI cards separately lol,
and reboot after every single PCI
card has been installed.
