View Full Version : Unwanted XP-XP dual boot

For reasons that would only underscore my stupidity, I now have a dual
boot system, with Windows XP Home (upgrade from Windows 98) installed on
both my C and D drives. I want to get rid of the D installation, and I
want to recover the space that is otherwise monopolized by the
files/directories associated with that installation. I have to do it
manually, because Windows XP doesn't show up when I go through the
control panel's "Add or Remove Programs" routine.
I know about editting boot.ini on the C drive -- that seems simple
enough. And I know I can safely get rid of hiberfil.sys and
pagefile.sys on D:\, as well as the D:\Windows, D:\Documents and
Settings, and D:\Program Files folders. There is also a D:\WUTemp
folder, which is empty so I assume it's OK to get rid of that?
That leaves one mystery folder on the D: drive -- a hidden system folder
called D:\System Volume Information. It has two subdirectories, one of
which seems to be associated with the D: Drive XP installation, the
other with the C: installation. Directories and sub-directories with
the same names appear on the C: and E: drives. Is it safe to delete the
subdirectories of the System Volume Information directories associated
with the D: installation?
Anything else I need to watch out for?
Thanks for any help.

Hi "SBCat",
well, the easiest way to get rid of _ALL_ information on the drive (D:), is
going to:
Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Storage - Disk
Management & format the drive.
This will delete _ALL_ data from the drive.

Hi,
The WUTemp folder is created by Windows Update. It is safe to delete, =
and will be recreated if needed. The update site creates that folder on =
drives with available space to download the setup files. It does not =
matter which drive the system is housed on.
The System Volume Information folder is created by System Restore, one =
will exist on each drive on the system, even if SR is disabled for that =
drive. You can delete the subdirectories if you wish.
