book and it suggested the CMOS battery might be low, so I
opened the case, removed the CR 2202 battery and checked
it. The charge was fine, according to my ohmeter, so I
put it back on the board, closed the box and restarted and
the PC found the two drives again.
Everything works like new.
The only explanation I can think of is that the CMOS lost
its bad information about the drives (which caused them
not to work) when I took out the battery. Then on restart
it just located the drives as it normally would, and wrote
the info. back to the CMOS.
