I would like to disable modem speaker for my dial-up
connection, but if I uncheck Enable modem speaker in Modem
Configuration it doesn't dial at all.
One may put M1 command in Windows 98 into modem
initialization string, is there something similar in
Windows XP?

Yes XP has the same option. You can add "ATM0" without the quotes (that's
ATMzero) in the Modem Properties dialog under "Additional Commands" (or
something like that...been a long time since I used a modem). M0 is mute,
M1-4 are increasing volume levels.
