Sorry this isn't strictly a WinXP problem, but I don't know where else
to look.
I am trying to find how to insert a fraction (e.g.. "half" or "quarter")
in a Word document, but cannot find anything in the Help menu. It did
suggest going to "Symbols" but that doesn't have a half or quarter sign
(on my copy).
Thanks in advance, even though off topic.

Hi jrjoy,
One way to do this is as follows -
With the Num-Lock key in your keyboard
turned on, use the numeric key pad:
To get the (three-quarters symbol) ¾ = Alt+0190
To get the (half symbol) ½ = Alt+0189
To get the (quarter symbol) ¼ = Alt + 0188
Or you might like to use charmap.exe to cut and
paste the symbols to word using the Select and Copy
buttons.

Do a Google search for "ASCII" and you should get a number
of lists with all those codes to insert characters.
If you have WORD, download the updates from MS and you
should have thousands of characters available. Each FONT
has different symbols.

In word97 (maybe similar in your version), Insert/Symbol -
change the font to (normal text), and the half/quarters
are there.
OR
¼ ½ ¾
which are made by :-
1. pressing and holding down the left Alt key
2. keying 0 1 8 8/ 0 1 8 9 / 0 1 9 0 on the keypad
Alt-0189 = ½

In Word, go to Insert, Symbol, Font drop-down menu.
There's plenty in there, an example of XP supplied fonts with fractions is
Palatino Linotype.
¼ ½ ¾

The easiest way to to do fractions for us folks that aren't long on memory
or suffering from the dreaded "old-timers" disease is to use the windows
character map in START > PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > CHARACTER
MAP
It's a few extra mouse clicks, but I can't ever remember the ASCII keyboard
strokes. AND there are also a whole bunch of other goodies for your computer
using pleasure on the char map tool.

Just butting in on this conversation.....
Is there a way to allocate ALT-0189 etc to function keys (like on the
old typewriters)?

In your START/programs/accessories/systemtool start "Character map" it
will allow you to insert all kinds of characters by each font type you use.
In most installations of "word" simply typing 1/2 will automatically
format itself to what you want.
Once you learn some of the character maps for fonts- you can use the Alt and
number keypad to get symbols- even outside of Word:
examples ±, ®, ° F, © etc...
