I also don't partition any longer. Like Alvin said,
whatever works best for you. I always keep my old hard
drive. I format it to blank and then copy my data from c:
to it about once a week. So if my c: dies I don't loose
what's important.
If you want to do system and data separation on the same
drive, partionmagic is good program to do it if you
already have a functioning drive.

The only benefit of partitioning a drive in my opinion is that you can keep
all data on the second partition and programs and such on the 1st partition.
If you require a rebuild of the OS you can reload without deleting the data
in most cases (unless you have an OEM rebuild CD).

Personally, I never throw out a hard drive unless it has crashed. I always
leave the original drive in the system as either my OS/program drive and my
new one as the data drive or the other way around. Same as partitioning but
two physical drives.

As for moving the swap file to the 2nd partition. It is not recommended to
move the swap file from the partition where XP is installed on a one drive
system. If you have a two drive system, move or leave the swap file on the
fastest drive. If you are going to move it to the new drive (as a 2nd
drive) do so before installing any data on it and set a large minimum size
of 1.5 times the amount of ram in the system.
