I can print from Windows programs but cannot print from
MS-DOS programs or the DOS prompt command line. No error
message, just nothing at the printer. I have the same
results with a HP LaserJet 4L or a Canon i850 on the
parallel port. Any ideas? Thanks

Check out in Printers and Faxes - r-click the printer and Properties.
Check that:

Ports page that It is correctly using LPT1

Advanced Page that the driver matches up, and that 'Spool Print
documents' and 'Start Printing directly' are selected. Check 'Print
spooled documents first'.

With those settings a COPY File.txt LPT1:
works on my 4L

Thanks Alex, the settings are already just as you've
recommeded but it doesn't work. I tried changing the
selection to "Print directly to printer" but that didn't
work either. I'm baffled.
