I upgraded to Windows XP to try to solve a hardward
problem. I have a Dell P3 733MHz with 512MB of RDRAM and
two hard drives - 40GB and 80GB. I am on an cable modem
that runs through and ethernet NIC.
A while ago, I noticed my HD was reading/writing at times
when I was not actively computing. Even during pauses in
activity and when the machine went into power save mode.
I was worried that I had been hacked, but there was no
activity through the firewall and it persisted even after
I disconnected the cable.
On the task manager - I can see some tasks working
(system, system idle, etc). AT times the CPU utilization
is pegged to the max, until I close some windows.
XP is a lot more stable but it has not solved this
problem. Any suggestions on how to solve this problem?
Thanks
