System restore

When I attempted to use the "system restore" function
there were no highlighted dates. Have been using the
system for 3 months - could not go back to a previous
month either. Have checked all setting and all appear to
be active. Any suggestions? Also how frequently should
bolded dates appear in months?

See "Troubleshooting System Restore in Windows XP"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302796). Usually the SR tool will
create one Restore Point a day if the computer is turned on and is
idle for the required time.
