Someone please help....
I have installed XP Home on a brand new partition after
getting random freezing of the OS, every now and again the
PC just freezes, up to 8 times a day, could be in any
application and is completely random. It doesn't have much
installed on it, just Norton Internet Security and MS
Office. The laptop is a Compaq Presario 701 FR.

Hello
Try doing a clean install but do not install Norton;s Secrurity or
MS office and let it run and see what happens.

This is a popular one, if you look on the web for freezing
and random restarting alot of comments are with regard to
your Power Supply rating and overheating. However I don't
really buy into the PSU deal, since I've run two machines
with AMD processors and well loaded 235w PSUs and they're
both as happy as larry.
Here are my suggestions anyway, ensure that your CPU fan
is working, and that the heatsink\fan is in good contact
with the CPU, also ensure you're running all the latest
drivers and ensure that your Motherboard BIOS is upto
date. I'd also suggest that you find a memory and hard
disk checking program, both of these components when dodgy
could cause freeze ups. Also check your motherboard BIOS
settings, try setting them to the board defaults (CPU
speed accepted). If you're overclocking don't.
Run "Windowsupdate" and install all the updates in drivers
and install SP1 if you haven't done so.
My best guess is that when it's freezing it's capturing no
error message in Event Viewer, but it may be worth a look
just to see if it gives you any clues.
Like you I've experienced random freeze ups, although not
for a while now. I've even known a machine freeze when
it's sitting there doing nothing. Anyway see how you get
on...
