Windows XP Pro Compatibility with DVD ROM/CD RW

My Vaio Z1A came with Windows XP Home edition. When I
upgrade it to Windows XP Profession edition, the DVD/CD
RW drive stopped working. Also, locked up my computer.
This didn't happen right a way. It was working fine
until I accessed a video file. The computer is working
okay now since my IT guy erased the decoder software. I
downloaded another decoder/driver from MS website, it
locked up again.

Am I having a compatibility issue between the Windows XP
Pro and the DVD/CD R/RW combo drive driver software?
Please help.
