Peter

What XP troubleshooter is suggesting is that you try one of the other ports.

But additionally you should try forcing XP to update the controllers and
drivers to the ones contained in Service Pack 1.
To do this go into device manager select the Enhaced host controller, right
click and uninstall.
Then restart the system to allow XP to re-detect the USB hardware. Updated
drivers should be autmoatically installed and any hardware connected should
be detected correctly.

Hope that helps

Thanks, i will try that... The 'troubleshooter' is simply a window that sez
the device is high speed usb2 and is connected to a non-usb2 port...yadda
yadda.......the ports are usb2...............

I've done this a dozen times, and Xp just keeps installing the VIA
drivers. In fact it's a little more complicated than that. I end up with
4 USB root hubs. THree of them are the VIA hubs supporting two ports
each (I have 6 ports on my machine). THe other hub, still loads a VIA
driver, but it looks like the "XP" one, and has, apparently, "six unused
ports". It doesn't matter which port I plug my stuff into, they never
end up on the Root hub with the six ports (The ones that Windows sees as
2.0 and wants me to use!). The real ****er is that these ports worked as
2.0 before the SP1 "upgrade".

How can I get rid of the old VIA stuff on this machine? MSI (the
motherboard maker) hasn't responded to my emails. How can I re-install
SP1 (I have never used anything but auotmatic update, so I don't even
know where SP1 might be on my machine if it's hre at all).

Help, please.

Peter

Hi Peter

Check your driver details for host controllers and root hubs in "device
manager"... the usbport.sys, Usbport.sys, Hccoin.dll, Usbehci.sys should all
be version 5.1.2600.1106 or later.

In addition go through all host controllers and root hubs in order (top to
bottom) and 'update driver' using the 'automatically' selected location -
rebooting if necessary.

Hope that helps this time.

I encountered this same problem, multiplying volumes/drives and all (think
my old scanmate flash reader didn't like SP1). Like you it worked just fine
before then afterwards experienced events similar to yours. First and
foremost, make sure SP1 is installed if your going to use USB2.

Afterwards, uninstalled your USB Controllers (this will remove everything
USB related, hubs, devices as well), reboot your system. System will
reinstall everything using SP1 USB2 and reinstall your USB Controller, then
Hubs and Devices. When done it should work just fine. Never had any
problems since.

Also not related but keep in mind IF a peripheral USB device requires decent
amount of power, do not run it through a hub but directly from the PC's rear
USB port. USB devices will flake if power demands are too high. If the USB
device has it's own power supply, then you can use the hub.

Good Luck!
