Jonathan, Dell has suggested he should remove and reinstall XP, with
their help. He asked me and I said I doubt it would fix the problem.

Do you think it would help or should we just remove and reinstall
Windows Messenger?

Thanks

Greetings Oliver,

Sorry for the slow response, I'll respond to your other message shortly however, the exact
problem here is going to be very hard to locate. A reinstallation of Windows usually don't
help the problem, as normally it's not a software issue, however if something has been
installed which is blocking the connection, then a reinstall of Windows may solve or at least
eliminate that possibility.

Remove and reinstalling Windows Messenger won't do much, but if he wants to try it, he can
simply remove it by closing down
Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger icon in the notification area/system
tray and click close). Then click the start button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste
if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

Then it can be reinstalled from here:
