I have Athlon processor on SD11 motherboard. I have 3
SDRAM slots. My board is able to detect only the first
module( 256 MB RAM module is installed). When I install
another 256 module on to the next slot, It shows only 256
instead of 512. The same thing happens with the third
slot.I was in the assumption that the other 2 slots are
bad. But yesterday i happened to open my MB from the box
and then tried installing the modules 256 + 256 + 128 and
to my luck and surprise the memory was detected as 640
total. Then I assembled back the motherboard into the box
with all the 3 modules but again it failed to recognize
the other 2 slots. it shows me only 256 MB. I tried many
things but failed.
Can anyone help me out with this problem.
Thanks In Advance,
Vani Bhat

take a look at your motherboard manual or call manufacturer sometimes memory
need to be installed in a paticular order or it might be possible that your
motherboards memory slots can only detect a certain size

That sounds like it may be a hardware problem with the motherboard itself.

Is the motherboard under any stress or pressure when it is in the case?
If it is and this causes the board to bend slightly (e.g. one of the
mounting points is higher or lower than the others) this could result in
the board being bent or twisted slightly, causing an interruption in some
of the circuit paths.

That would explain why the board works properly when it is out of the case
and there is no bending or twisting pressure being applied to it.

Hope this is of some assistance.

Good luck

In addition to Ron's advice look carefully at the mounting screw locations
on the motherboard. In some cases traces on the board are very close to the
mounting holes, and you could be shorting a trace to ground when you install
the board. If you see traces that are close to the mounting holes put an
insulating washer between the board and mounting stud, and you may need one
on the top also. Just make sure you don't insulate the board completely from
the case, you need a good case ground.
