I have installed 1.5 gb of memory in my system and when
the system boots up it is all counted in memory. But
when I go into XP to check the amount of memory it only
shows 1.0 gb of memory is this a know issue with memory
counts in XP or is there something that I will need to do.

Where in Windows XP are you looking at the amount of memory?
If you are using Accessories - System Tools - System Information then yes
there is a problem with that item sometimes reporting the wrong amount of
RAM.
However the System Properties window (right-click on My Computer and
select Properties or use Control Panel - System - General) should always
report the correct amount of RAM.
If that amount is not correct then use Start - Run - MSCONFIG. Go to the
BOOT.INI tab and click on the Advanced button. Make sure the /MaxMem
checkbox is not selected and that there is no amount in the value field
for that line.
Good luck
