View Full Version : Windows XP 64-bit hardware question

The only Windows XP 64-bit version I could find on the XP
home site was for IA64 hardware (e.g. Itanium) ; where is
the reference to the AMD64-oriented Athlon64/Opteron
Windows XP version ? Will it be delivered via SP2 (like
Windows Server 2003 SP1 including AMD64 core) ?
Then should I buy the Itanium 64bit version and wait ?
Also is there a way (I missed Winhec) to buy pre-beta or
beta ?
Thanks,
Chris

Greetings --
AMD's 64-bit Opteron processor is designed for servers. Windows
Server 2003 supports it. I've so far heard nothing that indicates AMD
is thinking of placing the Opteron in a workstation platform.

Hi,
Opterons are designed for both servers & workstations. Its biggest advantage
is that it can run standard (32-bit) XP (or other x86 OSes and programs )
without any problem. No performance degradation (seen in Itanium
processors).
Best regards

You are welcome. I don't think anybody can catch up with what's going on the
CPU market :) I 've just read a very good article about Opterons, that's why
i knew it.
Best regards
