I cannot install printers on any of three XP machines. I have tried to
piece together the suggestions for similar problems posted here, but
(obviously, or I wouldn't be posting this) they haven's succeeded.
I have:
Deleted the printers for Printers & Faxes
From Printers & Faxes, gone to &File, &Server Properties, chosen the
Drivers tab, and
removed the installed print drivers.
Detach the printer from the computer ( parallel port LPT1 )
Installed the printer.
Re-Attached the printer.
At this point, the printers exist in Printers & Faxes.
I can select the printer, and go to properties and print a test page fails.
For some of the printers I have tried, I can run utilities on the printer
( align cartridges, etc ) but still cannot print.
All help would be appreciated.

Is the driver designed for XP? Have you gone to the manufacturers web and
retrieved the latest driver for XP? Are you following the manufacturer
installation instructions? Some require the printer to be unplugged and some
require to be plugged in on installation.

Yes, I've tried both of these. HP says to use XP's driver, Lexmark doesn't
say much of anything. I've tried the install both with and without the
printer being connected.

It helps alot of time when you tell what kind of printer you have when
explaining a printer problem. Now that you've mentioned you have a Lexmark.
From Bruce Sanders web site.
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm This is an
additional steps to take along with what you did if you have a LEXMARK
printer:
If you have a Lexmark printer, these additional steps may be necessary
(thanks to Robert Orleth [MSFT] for providing this information). The
Lexmark printer installation process sometimes installs a service that makes
the print spooler service dependent on itself. If there is a problem with
Lexmark service or a Lexmark printer driver (or you removed it using the
steps above), the print spooler service may not start (see also
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324757). The steps
below make the print spooler service only dependent on the Remote Procedure
Call (RPC) service (RPCSS), which is normal. The print spooler service
dependencies are stored in the registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Service s\Spooler\DependOnService
The sc config command at step 15 resets the value of that entry.
14.. Open a Command Prompt window
15.. key the command
sc config spooler depend= RPCSS
(note the space after the = but not before)
16.. restart the print spooler (see steps 8 and 9 above)
