Hello,
I have a very old dot matrix printer (~1990) as one of the
many printers in my house. It is an old brother printer.
When my system was running win 98, I could get the printer
to work by disabling a check box "Check printer port state
before printing" in the printers>ports dialogue. However
Now that I am running XP, this option does not exist, and
I cannot get the printer to function at all.
I have searched far and wide and can't find out how to
disable this option. I was hoping that someone may be
able to guide me as to how to fix this problem. If anyone
has any other ideas on how to fix this problem it would
also be very much appreciated. thank you.

In the ports tab of the printer properties look for "Enable bidrectional
support" and turn that off.
