View Full Version : problem w/ brand new computer and xp pro. HELP!!!!!!

ok so here's the deal.
i recently bought a new computer consisting of the
following items
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton core, 333FSB)
ECS A7S7A2 Motherboard
512 MB DDR2700 Kingston Hyper X RAM (1x512)
ECS VGA video card 64MB SDRAM 4x AGP
2 CD-ROM's 1 DVD and 1 CD-RW
Antec case with 350w power supply
I used the same 40 gig hard drive from my old computer
ok heres what happened, i assembled everything together
and poped in my hard drive. it still had xp and
everything on it from my old dell computer, i figured it
would just boot up normally and recognize the new
hardware. (the HD didnt have everything on it from when i
got it from dell, i've formatted it a few times and added
partitions, the version of xp i have also didnt come with
the dell). it starts to boot but right when it would go
to the windows loading screen it would just reboot. (it
was getting a blue screen but i couldnt see what error it
was because it would reboot like instantly)
so i figured i had too much new hardware and i was just
going to have to reinstall windows xp again, no problem
right? so i formatted my windows partition ( i have one
for windows, apps, data, and backup stuff) and reloaded
xp.
everything seemed to be working fine until i got into
windows for the first time and my sound didnt work.
i checked device manager to see that i had exclamations
next to quite a few things
-multimedia audio controller
-Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
-and some unknown device under ports (i'm guessing it's
my onboard LAN since everyting else that wasn't working
was onboard stuff too)
so i went to install the drivers for that stuff from the
motherboard cd, and whenever it found the driver and went
to install it, it would say that the driver was not
digitally signed and had not passed windows xp testing or
something. which doesnt sound right because this
motherboard is relitivly new from ecs, AND i just built a
computer with somewhat similar parts with the same model
motherboard, xp, 512 DDR, amd athlon 2400+
(throughbread), and after xp was installed worked fine.
so then i went ahead and installed the multimedia audio
controller which then added like 10 more unknown devices
that all ended up being parts of the multimedia
controller. so once i installed all those, against xp's
recommendation not to, i got my sound to work.
i dont know about that unknown port, my internet works so
i'm not quite sure about that.
also when i go to plug my digital camera in, it cant
install the drivers it needs to view the pictures, but i
know it has them because i've done it before.
ALSO, i cant utilize windows update. when i go to the
site, i'll download the update software and it gives me
this reoccuring message that my update software needs to
be updated and i cant get in. i've done the
troubleshooting for that problem with no help.
my system has also crashed a few times, once in a game,
once in standby <<!? (or trying to come out of it)
i've tried re-reloading xp 3-4 times now i think, trying
different things.
today i flashed my bios with a newer version. i have yet
to reload xp after that...
my guess is that if it's hardware related which at this
point and after the process of elimination, seems like it
has to be- somethings wrong with the motherboard.
oh, and i have found a way to download the express xp
service pack 1, and when it starts to install, after the
screen about archiving your files, it comes up with an
error about "update.inf" being screwed up or something,
and to check if my Cryptographic service is running,
which it is.
so, if it's not hardware related, then i have NO IDEA.
any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks to
anyone who actually read this far down!

Greetings --
So you're trying to install a Dell OEM version of WinXp upon an
entirely different PC? Shouldn't work. You'll need to buy a new
license.

Was it an upgrade to an OEM W98? If so you'll need some
Windows OS to use the retail XP upgrade over.
