When I delete, a shredder type icon appears. I don't
seem to have the option of sending things to my Recycle
Bin. They seem to permanently delete.
Can you tell me how to change this setting, so everything
I delete goes to the Recycle Bin first?

Right click on the Recycle Bin, then uncheck the box, "Do not move files =
to the Recycle Bin, Removes files immediately when deleted".

Right click recycle bin. Select properties. Remove check mark from 'do not
move files to the recycle bin'

When you say "a shedder like icon appears" it sounds like you might have
installed a third party application that is doing this. Try uninstalling the
app or look for a setting in that app that controls how files are deleted.
