I have heard that it is possible to install hardware or software that was
intended for use in Windows 98/Me and adjust settings in XP to allow them to
function properly. Is this possible. I am getting a pc with XP but have a
scanner for 98. No updated drivers at scanner site. Does this trick work?
Thanks.

Try the Program Compatibility Wizard. It can be found in Start, All
Programs, Accessories, Program Compatibility Wizard.
This wizard will improve the chances that older applications will work by
creating an environment that is more similar to the listed OS' that are
listed. It won't work all the time, so you should probably try out all the
modes to see which works the best.
If the Program Compability Wizard does not help, you should look into
getting hardware/software that is designed for Windows XP
This tip may not work as well for drivers, but it is worth trying out first
before any other action.

Got my Mustek scanner working in XP by using Win2K drivers.

It's called compatibility mode, it is designed to allow you to use some older software in XP. It DOES NOT work for drivers. You must
use XP compatible drivers for your hardware, if none are available try the Windows 2000 driver.

TB, check the manufacturer's website. Sometimes there aren't updated XP
drivers but the scanner is WIA compliant. That means it will at least work
with the Scanner and Camera wizard part of XP. Not as many bells and
whistles as the full-fledged scanner drivers and software but there will at
least be basic operability. Also, as someone mentioned, if Win2000 drivers
are available - they're worth a try as they often work just fine in XP.
