View Full Version : Why XP Pro does not find drivers for USB?

My friend's computer specs are:
Computer:
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional
OS Service Pack Service Pack 1
Motherboard:
CPU Type Intel Pentium IIIE, 900 MHz (9 x 100)
Motherboard Name Aristo M754LMR (3 PCI, 2 DIMM, Audio, Video,
LAN, Modem)
Motherboard Chipset ALi M1631 ALADDiN TNT2
System Memory 992 MB (SDRAM)
BIOS Type AMI (08/22/00)
The problem is that there no drivers are assigned by XP to the USB ports in
the mother board and nothing connected to the USB is ever detected as a
consequence. When asked to install device drivers, XP searches and searches
its CD then does the same in the Internet, finally gives up by saying no
drivers are found for this device, contact your manufacturer. I have never
seen anything like this. XP is SUPPOSED to have the drivers. What could be
the problem? The M/B website is no help and the chipset web site offers USB
drivers which we installed and still the USB is without drivers.
Any help will be thankfully appreciated,
Peter S.

Is this somehow a conspiracy with Windows..?? I have USB2 5 port pci card
installed since last week. I was told that SP1 provided support for USB2 and
NOT to install any manufacturers drivers..O.K.... I also bought an external
USB2 HD enclosure and hooked it up... I am not getting the advertised speed
(of USB 2) but it runs.. Windows XP 'kicks-out' any other drivers i have
tried, either for the HD enclosure bridge or the PCI card....
Been searching all week for some answers on this and some very good people
have offered explanations; none work.. The differences here are small,
except that you are running Pro and i have Home Edition XP... Coincidently,
My name is also 'Peter'..
Is this the Twilight Zone? ..If i should come-up with anything substantial i
will gladly share it with you, Sir..I am presently stymied on this.

On my XP Pro SP1 there is no USB problem. Both the onboard and 2-port USB to
PCI work properly and I needed no drivers to install as XP did it all. The
puzzling thing is why the same procedure fails for my friend's machine who
also runs XP Pro SP1. Why does Windows find the drivers in my case and not
in his. Eventually we'll find a solution
