CD-RW backing error message

I am trying to back up Word files and burn them to a CD-
RW. During the process an error message saying a file
is "In use by another program. Access denied." Word is
closed. Then when I try to delete the files from the D
drive, the same error message comes up. So am I stuck
with unwriteable files waiting to be copied in my D
drive? How do I get rid of them? And how do I get a
clean back up of my files?
