Display 480 and not 512

My computer has 512mb of memory but it only registers on
having 480mb of ram. WHY?

Nicholas already answered your question... most on-board graphics chips will
'share' up to 32Mb of any RAM memory available... hence the 'missing' 32Mb
from your 512Mb.

If you take out one of your 256 stick you'll probably find you only have
224Mb available.
