Sounds in applications

Thanks in advance for any help.

My sound card works properly; I am able to play music
using media player. I can also play default tones in the
Control Panel. However, when I run Outlook Express or ACT
2000! for Windows, the receive mail sound in Outlook and
the alarm warnings in ACT no longer play.

In Outlook the play sound when new message arrives box is
checked. In ACT! there is no option to turn off the
alarms. Everything else on my system works properly.
These alarms were working yesterday.
