Ad-aware
Spybot Search and Destroy
I would be careful of any others. SOME of these tools actually
install their own spyware as they delete others. These two are highly
recommended by a large group of people.
Also, some people recommend using two, so that you can be assured one
is not spying on you.

Definitely use the two in combination.
I've never seen any instance of either installing Spyware & doubt it very
much, BUT, I often find that one picks up Ad/Spware that the other misses.

I posted the URLs for the two best programs that the guy
asked for and I wasn't kidding. I don't work for Google or
LavaSoft or SpyBot. What's with the "troll???"

I checked out the Adware site, and when I went to one of their mirror sites
to download, My SpyBot blocked a spyware installation... go figure - you get
a free spyware installation with each download?
Although I know that Adware can't control the mirror/download sites, I'm
surprised that this happened.
Very Strange..

They may have been an activeX control that was trying to load from the site,
but Ad-Aware contains absolutely no spyware.

Since Ad-Aware 6 came out, I've only used the first mirror site they list --
Majorgeeks.com -- not for any reason of believing it is better than the
others, just that it's first on the list and always works superbly.
And, it's never downloaded any sort of spyware or other scumware at all.
I'm curious which site you used.

For software, I couldn't add to what the others have suggested.
But, for a quickie alternative -- something that will catch the five dozen
or so worst culprits, diagnose them and provide information on their
origins, behavior, risk level, and removal -- just point Internet Explorer
at http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm and wait 10-15 seconds for a report. Though
I ultimately end up using Ad-Aware 6 for serious work on client and other
end-user machines, in doing a front-end check to rule out spyware and other
scumware issues, this 10-second check is always where I start.

It was the techconnect link, and it tried to send "Avenue A, Inc."

Keep in mind that Spybot identifies cookies as spyware. This is not
entirely accurate.

Some cookies are more than a 1 KB tag, some are programs,
with no expiration.
