View Full Version : How to transfer XP to a new hard drive?

I get a new hard drive and I want to move my XP pro to the
new one. Since XP pro was originally installed on the old
drive, is there any convenient way to transfer it to the
new hard drive instead of total reinstall?
Another question is, if re-install is absolutely required,
will it cause some problems cause I heard that activated
XP cannot be installed on another computer? I guess
another hard drive is not another computer, right? :)
Thanks in advance.

You need to make an "image" of your old hard drive and then
transfer the "image" to your new drive. To accomplish this,
you'll need to purchase a third-party program:
Norton Ghost 2003
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/ghost/ghost_personal/
or
PowerQuest Drive Image
http://www.powerquest.com/driveimage/
You may also wish to visit the support website of the manufacturer of =
your
new hard drive and see if they have a free utility program that you can =
use to
accomplish this task. For example, if you have a new Western Digital =
drive,
you can download their free Data Lifeguard Tools which includes =
"drive-to-drive
copy capability" (Ref: http://support.wdc.com/download/).

I've used Norton's Ghost at least twice to do just what you want to do.
I'm sure there are other programs that will do the job just as well.
Moving your XP onto another hard drive will not require reactivation
Go for it.

MaxBlast didn't do it for me even though Maxtor insisted that it'd work. I
ended up reinstalling XP Pro.
A new h.disk will not invoke reactivation providing no other major changes
preceded it such as a new motherboard. A new hard disk is a minor change.

I just installed a new WD 80Gb drive and used Lifeguard
Tools to do a hard drive clone, but the new drive will
not function as a boot drive by itself. There is
definitely a step missing. I wish MS would give us the
info to make this easy. I have no problem with anti-
piracy protection, but this is rediculous!!
