View Full Version : Device Failure on Radeon 9700 Pro?

Hello,

I put a system together about two months ago, and for the most part it
has been very stable (I mainly use it for video editing). But it DOES
seem to crash far too often whenever I'm in certain 3D game (Half-Life
or Deus Ex for example).

Here are the specs:

- ASUS P4G8X motherboard, 2GB PC3200 RAM, 3.0 ghz Intel P4.
- Cooler Master aluminum case with 5 case fans and a Fortron 400W
power supply
- internal drives include Plextor burner, Zip, floppy, and a WD 120 GB
hard drive
- cards include a Pyro firewire card and ATI Radeon 9700 Pro in an 8X
AGP slot

Here are the symptoms:

- anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 minutes into a 3D game, the screen
will freeze and the audio will start repeating like a broken record

- usually, I cannot end task, and I'll have to reset the system

- it will always boot up fine after a reset (a hard shut down/power
off is not necessary)

- if I CAN end task, then I usually find Windows with display settings
at 640 x 480 and 16 colors, with a dialog saying Windows has recovered
from a device failure

I'm running Windows XP Pro with all the latest patches, and the latest
video card drivers from Radeon

The only other thing I've noticed is that the crash seems to coincide
with my power supply fan kicking in to high gear, but this does not
cause a crash UNLESS I'm in some kind of 3D game.

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance . .

Doug
