I am trying to mount a USB external HDD on a Toshiba Satellite notebook with
XP Pro SP1. The device is USB2 compliant but the notebook ports are USB1.
I intend to purchase a USB2 Cardbus.
When I plug the HDD USB cable into the machine, the installation Wizard
starts but gives me a message "one of the filter drivers installed is
invalid". The device is shown in device manager under disk drives as
IBM-DJSA-230 USB Device with a yellow exclamation mark. Nevertheless the
device does function as I can copy to and read from it albeit rather slowly
:-). There is nothing in device manager under Universal Bus Serial
Controllers to indicate the presence of the new drive.
The drivers associated with the USB HDD are drvmcdb.sys (Veritas) and
PartMgr.sys (Microsoft).
My question is does all this sound "normal" for a USB2 HDD caddy plugged
into a USB1 port? The reason I ask is because this does not seem to relate
at all to questions being asked in these NGs on this and similar subjects.
I was of the impression that the USB HDD would be shown as a "Removeable
Drive"
When I get a USB2 Cardbus and load the USB2 drivers will the externaldrive
then be identified as a Removeable Drive? At present it is identified as
Disk1_Vol1 (H:).
Your guidance will be appreciated.
