View Full Version : Xp machine will not boot up!

This was posted earlier from another gentleman and it
describes exactly the same problem I am having:

"I have a Windows XP machine that on boot after the WinXP
logo screen shows the bar moving across, the screen goes
blank and nothing happens. I try to boot into Safe Mode
(and all versions of) and it starts its list of drivers
loading and hangs with the last driver showings as
agpcpq.sys. I then try to boot from the CD and go into
the Recovery Console. It asks for which Windows
installation I would like to log on to. There is only one
and when I select "1" and then hit Enter, it hangs."

I actually took out the hard drive and installed it in to
another xp machine and designated it a slave drive. I was
able to access almost all of the files on the drive(except
for the Admin files!) So I know the hard drive is ok, I
also ran scandisk and it says it is fine. I also ran a
virus check on the drive while it was in the other machine
and it came out fine. So at this point for the life of me
I can not figure why it will not fire up on the original
machine. Just the windows logo and then a black screen. I
even tried to reinstall or repair of windows but it hangs
up when it says it is looking for a current version. The
only odd thing that happened right before this mess, when
we tried to open the internet explorer it came back with
an error saying that the explorer could not open and it
wanted to send a report to Microsoft. So I dedcided to
reboot but to no avail. Quite honestly I am confounded, my
machine will post up, and I can go into the bios and
reconfigure it. That makes me believe it is not a hardware
issue. Any info or advice to shed light on this problem
would be much appreciated! Thanks to all who read. Larry

Thanks Tom, but the problem is it freezes up...I cannot
even get to that choice.

I hope you are not booting into the Recovery Console. It's not hanging,
it's waiting for a DOS command. That's the wrong Repair function. You
have to click Install (not Repair) and it will examine your system and then
give you the option to Install or Repair. This is the Repair function you
want, not the first one (Recovery Console). You could also try Last Known
Good Configuration instead of Safe Mode. If neither works you may want to
salvage your files and reinstall.
