I was shocked with the above mentioned message. I can
not find any documentation on the Windows XP support
site. This catastrophic error ocured on a 40GB Western
Digital HD. Can anyone help?

This message means exactly what it says... your hard drive is on it's last
legs... Be thankful you've had a warning....

You need to back up any files you want to keep access to and buy a new Hard
Drive. If your current one is the only one on your system then you'll need
to re-install XP on the new HD.

Hope that helps

I have replaced more WD hard drives than any other brand. Back up your data
while you can and get ready for the failure that is coming. Try another
brand of HD. I have used Seagate and Maxtor with few problems. HTH.

Just as an addendum to this comment, I have experienced just the oposite. I
was at one time sysadmin for a section that had nearly 300 computers (Sun,
Apple, Microns, Silicon Graphics and Dells). I had the most problems with
the Dell badged HDDs and the Quantum HDDs. Maxtors were always the worst
drives of all...failure ridden and slooooww. The WD series, including the
SE and Caviar editions, were always the
ones that gave me the least problems and by far had the lowest defect rate.
Seagates are either very good or very bad, but the "good: seagates last a
long, long time. Fujitsu drives are fast, but can be quirky. As a result
of my experience, I tend to recommend WD over other brands. I have read
that Dell no longer has issues with the drives in its' machines, but I was
burned by them so many times that I will never use/recommend their products
ever again. Again, this is my opinion based upon my experience.

Most, if not all of the drive manufacturers sell various levels of drives,
from bargain to consumer to high-end. Needless to say, you'll get better
results with the better drives.
