I am following the Wizard's instructions to the letter
but when I reach the "wait while wizard makes the
connection to the other computer" Both my desktop (XP)
and my laptop(ME), just keep on searching, forever.
I tried Auto detect then Com 1 then Com 4. All the same
result.
Am I missing something?

Hi Bob -
A direct cable connection between two serial ports requires what's called a
"null-modem" or cross-over cable where the lines to send and receive data
are reversed from one end of the cable to the other. Both can be picked up
at most computer stores for a fairly reasonable price.

I have a Belkin Serial File Transfer Cable - 10 feet
F3X171-10 which Belkins says will do the trick. But
doesn't.

Hi Bob -
Yep - you have a crossover cable all right. Have you checked the BIOS of
both machines to ensure that the COM port is enabled? Often COM ports are
disabled to free up an IRQ. Look in Control Panel | System | Device Manager
at the Ports item in both machines to check whether or not the COM ports are
enabled and that they're functioning properly.

Hi Jef..
Device manager for com 1 on both computers appear to be
OK.
No conflicts,
and "properties" says this device is working properly on
both.

Hi Bob -
Sorry to say that I'm out of ideas (we've exhausted the obvious).
Hopefully someone more experienced will jump in and give you a hand.
Perhaps it would help your situation to post the makes and models of both
computers.
Sorry to not be of more help.

Bob -
One other possibility: you might have a bad cable. Might be worth taking it
back to the computer store and having it tested out.
