modem problem on xp

hi, just upgraded a 1 ghz HP to winxp, no issues except that programs that
require the modem (ie, compuserve, aol) take 3-4 minutes to find the modem.
Device manager diagnostics can communicate with the modem but are also
sluggish. Lucent Win Modem is on XP HCL. Any ideas what to check next?

Even Though the Modem is on the XP HCL list it could have had a problem with
the upgrade. Sometimes you just need to un-install the modem from device
manager, re-boot the system and let XP setup the new hardware.
At least that worked for my WinModem(PCTel 56K)
